CCL-Carnival Excludes Puerto Vallarta from Mexican Riviera Itinerary Due to Security Concerns
CCL-Carnival Cruise Line has made the decision to temporarily remove Puerto Vallarta from its Mexican Riviera itinerary due to security concerns stemming from recent unrest in the region. The violence, linked to cartel activities following the death of a cartel leader, prompted a heightened security alert and a U.S. government travel advisory advising increased caution. Although shelter-in-place orders were later lifted, Carnival has opted for a cautious approach regarding port calls in Jalisco State.
The Carnival Panorama’s planned stop in Puerto Vallarta on February 28, 2026, was canceled, and the ship instead remained at sea or visited alternative ports as the situation was assessed. The suspension of port calls to Puerto Vallarta will be extended for several weeks, with no confirmed date for resumption.
Other cruise lines have also adjusted their itineraries, opting to bypass Puerto Vallarta in light of the broader Security Level 2 advisory from the U.S. State Department affecting parts of Mexico. Alternative ports such as Cabo San Lucas and Mazatlán are being utilized where possible.
Despite the unrest, cruises to other Mexican Pacific and Caribbean destinations will continue as planned, and Carnival’s changes specifically affect only the Gulf of California segment of the affected voyages. Passengers have been informed that any excursions booked for Puerto Vallarta will either be refunded or modified in accordance with the new routing.
Cruises on the remaining segments of the Mexican Riviera are operating as normal, and Carnival, along with other cruise operators, is closely monitoring the situation and collaborating with local authorities to determine when it will be safe to resume calls at Puerto Vallarta.
