Norovirus Outbreak: Cases Reported Aboard HAL’s MS Westerdam at Kai Tak Terminal
Epidemiological surveillance was initiated by health authorities in Hong Kong on March 1, 2026, following the docking of Holland America Line’s MS Westerdam at the Kai Tak Cruise Terminal. The ship had around 2,000 passengers and 800 crew members aboard, many of whom exhibited symptoms consistent with acute gastroenteritis during their voyage.
The MS Westerdam had been on a circular itinerary since mid-February, stopping in Japan, South Korea, and mainland China. After its arrival, a total of 76 confirmed cases of gastrointestinal illness were reported, characterized by symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, and fever, according to interim findings from the Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Hong Kong Department of Health.
Laboratory analyses conducted on stool samples from affected individuals confirmed the presence of norovirus, a common cause of outbreaks in confined spaces such as cruise ships. Health teams boarded the Westerdam shortly after its arrival, around 4:00 AM local time, following prior notification from the onboard medical staff. They promptly collected detailed information regarding the illness, conducted environmental and epidemiological assessments, and inspected food hygiene standards on the ship.
To adhere to public health protocols, a temporary medical station was established at the terminal for triaging disembarking passengers and monitoring their health as they left the vessel. Most reported cases remained mild, with few individuals experiencing persistent symptoms, and none requiring hospitalization.
After completing the disembarkation process and necessary assessments on the shore, the cruise operator enacted enhanced sanitation measures, thoroughly cleaning and disinfecting public areas in alignment with international ship sanitation standards.
Later that day, the MS Westerdam was allowed to set sail for its next port of call after port health officials confirmed that onboard hygiene and conditions were satisfactory for a safe continuation of the voyage. Health authorities continue to highlight the significance of personal and environmental hygiene in preventing the spread of norovirus, particularly in close-contact settings like cruise ships.
