Explora Journeys Celebrates Key Milestones for EXPLORA IV, EXPLORA V, and EXPLORA VI at Fincantieri Shipyard
MSC Explora Journeys recently celebrated significant construction milestones for its expanding fleet at Fincantieri’s shipyard in Sestri Ponente, Genoa, on March 9, 2026. The ceremony showcased the technical launch and float-out of EXPLORA IV, the traditional coin and keel-laying for EXPLORA V, and the steel-cutting for EXPLORA VI. This event marks a notable point in the company’s strategy to deploy a total of six ships by 2028.
The event was attended by key figures, including Pierfrancesco Vago and Anna Nash from MSC, along with local officials and shipyard representatives. Currently, the fleet operates two vessels, and EXPLORA III is anticipated to be delivered in July 2026. The construction of four ships at the shipyard is progressing quickly, reflecting the brand’s ambitious growth plans.
The ceremony also celebrated maritime traditions, featuring godmothers Captain Serena Melani, who previously captained EXPLORA I and II, and Alice Gallo from the shipyard. During the event, the ship’s godmother for the technical launch was Cristina Bacigalupo from the outfitting workshop.
The six vessels under construction at Fincantieri entail an investment of about EUR 3.5 billion, contributing to MSC’s broader commitment of nearly EUR 7 billion in the Italian shipbuilding sector. Following the launch of EXPLORA III, which will make its Mediterranean debut before its naming ceremony in Barcelona on August 1, the subsequent ships are set to be introduced progressively in the coming years.
A vital aspect of the fleet’s design lies in its environmental commitment. The ships will be equipped to use liquefied natural gas (LNG), with plans for eventual adaptation to bio-LNG and synthetic LNG. Additionally, the vessels will support shore-power connectivity, reducing emissions while docked. Upcoming technological advancements may also see the integration of fuel-cell systems on EXPLORA V and EXPLORA VI, further enhancing the fleet’s environmental capabilities.
