Palma to Reduce Cruise Passenger Capacity Starting in 2027: What You Need to Know
Authorities in Palma de Mallorca are set to implement a reduction in the number of cruise ship tourists allowed to visit the port city during the peak summer season beginning in 2027. The new limits will lower the daily passenger capacity from 8,500 to 7,500 between June and September for the years 2027 through 2029. Outside of these peak months, the current limit will remain.
This decision stems from concerns about the impact of high tourism volumes on local infrastructure and day-to-day life. As part of the new regulations, only three cruise ships will be permitted to dock in Palma on any given day, with a maximum of one vessel allowed to exceed 5,000 passengers.
Local officials have addressed public sentiment by emphasizing that the changes aim to balance cruise operations with the city’s interests, especially in historic areas frequented by visitors. The Balearic Islands, with Mallorca as the largest, have experienced substantial tourism pressure, with visitor numbers reaching around 18.7 million in 2024 and exceeding 19 million in 2025. The islands’ resident population is approximately 1.2 million.
