Viking River Cruises Restarts Nile Operations Despite Ongoing Regional Tensions
Viking River Cruises has announced the resumption of its Nile River cruises starting March 12, 2026, after initially suspending all departures for the month. The decision was made after careful monitoring of the ongoing USA-Iran conflict, consultations with trusted local operators in Egypt, and consideration of the current travel advisories issued by the U.S. State Department.
Despite the regional tensions, official travel warnings for Egypt have not changed significantly. Specific areas, such as northern and central Sinai and parts of the Western Desert, remain under a Level 4 “do not travel” advisory, while the majority of the country is classified under a Level 2 advisory, which encourages Americans to exercise increased caution. The U.S. Embassy in Cairo confirmed it is functioning normally as of March 4.
In contrast, other cruise operators have opted for a more cautious approach. Avalon Waterways has suspended all operations in Egypt through March, while Tauck has cancelled several of its land-cruise itineraries, including parts of its Egypt: Jewels of the Nile and Jordan & Egypt: Petra programs. Additionally, AmaWaterways has paused Jordan and Dubai extensions until March 31.
As the largest Western cruise operator in Egypt with a fleet of eight ships on the Nile, Viking is poised to resume its itineraries, emphasizing its commitment to safety and coordination with local partners.
