Dockworkers’ Protest Disrupts Access to Port of Maceió Before MSC Seaview Arrival
Access to the Port of Maceió in Brazil was severely hampered following a protest by dockworkers on Wednesday morning. The workers set up barricades and displayed banners on Avenida Cícero Toledo in the Jaraguá district, marking their decision to strike. This action resulted in significant traffic congestion as trucks and other vehicles struggled to navigate towards the port.
By around 7:30 a.m., reports indicated that two of the three lanes on the road were blocked, leading to lengthy traffic jams that extended into adjacent parking areas in Jaraguá. This disruption coincided with the scheduled arrival of the cruise ship MSC Seaview at approximately 10 a.m., which was expected to bring increased activity to the port as buses, taxis, and tour operators prepared for passenger transfers and excursions.
The strike is driven by the workers’ demands for wage adjustments based on the INPC inflation index, along with calls for reduced costs associated with employee health plans. They indicated that a resolution of these issues would be necessary before they could halt the work stoppage.
As of the morning of the protest, port authorities had not released an official statement regarding the situation or any potential operational effects.
