Cruise Ships Stranded in the Arabian Gulf: A Closer Look at the Repatriation of Passengers
Regional tensions in the Middle East have severely impacted cruise operations in the Arabian Gulf, stranding several cruise ships in ports across Dubai, Doha, and Abu Dhabi. This disruption has led to the cancellation of numerous planned voyages to Europe and the urgent repatriation of thousands of passengers.
Approximately 15,000 cruise tourists are affected, as companies like MSC Cruises, TUI, Celestyal Cruises, and AROYA find their vessels unable to set sail. Celestyal Cruises has two ships currently docked: the Celestyal Discovery in Dubai and the Celestyal Journey in Doha. The company confirmed that passengers aboard the Celestyal Discovery have safely disembarked, while those on the Celestyal Journey are expected to leave the ship shortly. Both ships remain operational but await further guidance from authorities for their departure.
The disruptions have resulted in the cancellation of two of Celestyal’s planned Mediterranean sailings, affecting cruises scheduled for March 20 and March 23. Affected passengers will be offered full refunds or future cruise credits. Similarly, AROYA Cruises has also cancelled the remainder of its winter program in the Gulf after safely disembarking passengers on March 7.
MSC Cruises is actively arranging repatriation flights for over 1,500 passengers from the MSC Euribia, working tirelessly to ensure their safe and timely return to various destinations including the UK, Italy, Germany, Spain, the US, and Brazil.
TUI has announced the cancellation of several sailings involving its vessels in the region. The Mein Schiff 4 will not set sail until at least March 23, while Mein Schiff 5 has halted operations through March 12. The company is organizing return travel for passengers from both ships, utilizing charter flights and commercial seats with Qatar Airways.
This situation underlines the ongoing challenges faced by the cruise industry amid regional instability, as operators navigate the complexities of passenger safety and logistics in turbulent circumstances.
