Dockworkers Protest Halts Access to Port Maceio Ahead of MSC Seaview Arrival
Access to the Port of Maceió in Brazil faced significant disruptions on Wednesday morning due to a protest by dockworkers. The protest blocked a key route to the port, leading to heavy traffic congestion for trucks and other vehicles attempting to access the port facilities.
Demonstrators set up barricades along Avenida Cícero Toledo in the Jaraguá district, announcing their strike with banners. By approximately 7:30 a.m., two of the three lanes of the road were blocked, causing long lines of traffic stretching into nearby parking areas.
This disruption coincided with the scheduled arrival of the MSC Seaview at around 10 a.m. The arrival was expected to increase activity at the terminal, with buses, taxis, and tour operators preparing for passenger transfers and shore excursions.
The strike was primarily fueled by demands for wage adjustments based on the INPC inflation index and requests for reductions in employee health plan costs. Protesters indicated that these issues must be addressed before they would consider ending their work stoppage.
As of the morning of the protest, no official statements had been released by port authorities regarding potential impacts on operations.
