AmaWaterways Unveils Exciting “City Escapes” River Cruise Program in Europe
AmaWaterways has unveiled a novel series of river cruises in Europe called "City Escapes." This program aims to offer travelers an opportunity for extended stays in key cities along the Seine, Rhine, and Danube rivers. Scheduled primarily during less busy travel periods, the initiative seeks to enable guests more time ashore, minimizing congestion at popular destinations.
The City Escapes concept focuses on a leisurely travel approach, fostering deeper cultural connections. Unlike traditional river cruises that feature brief stops, these itineraries include extended overnight stays and longer daytime journeys, allowing travelers to immerse themselves in various cities, including Paris, Amsterdam, Vienna, Strasbourg, and Budapest, with at least 24 hours in each location.
Catherine Powell, CEO of AmaWaterways, highlighted that this program caters to those looking for a more thoughtful exploration of European destinations. The itineraries provide leeway for guests to enjoy museums, culinary experiences, and historical neighborhoods without feeling rushed, embodying the essence of luxury travel.
The inaugural departures are set for 2026, expanding into 2027 across three river regions.
For those sailing along the Seine, the itineraries promise more time in Paris, alongside stops at Rouen and regions of Normandy. While in Paris, passengers can delve into historic areas like the Île de la Cité and neighborhoods such as Le Marais. Optional excursions may feature visits to the Fondation Louis Vuitton and the Musée Marmottan Monet. In Normandy, guests can explore the D-Day Landing Beaches, the picturesque town of Honfleur, or the modernist port of Le Havre, with activities in Rouen ranging from guided medieval city walks to châteaux excursions.
The Rhine routes will emphasize cultural and historical sites, including Breisach, Strasbourg, Heidelberg, Cologne, and Amsterdam. Passengers can look forward to excursions in Colmar and the Bartholdi Museum or vineyard tours in the Alsace region, culminating with a visit to the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
For the Danube, passengers can expect extensive cruising through scenic landscapes like the Wachau Valley and Danube Bend, alongside cultural offerings in Budapest, Bratislava, Vienna, Linz, and Passau. Suggested activities in Budapest might include exploring Buda’s historic areas, while in Bratislava, guests can enjoy local tastings and old town tours. Vienna will feature a dinner concert at the House of Strauss, with further excursions from Linz to Salzburg and Český Krumlov, before concluding in Passau.
Additionally, AmaWaterways is enhancing its land programs with new pre- and post-cruise offerings in London and Rome, which will present cultural excursions and culinary experiences, including visits to Vatican City and guided tours of Westminster.
To celebrate the launch of the City Escapes program, a promotional offer has been introduced for selected departures booked between March 6th and June 30th, 2026. This includes discounts of up to $1,000 per stateroom, complimentary cabin upgrades, and a $50 onboard credit per passenger.
