Cruise Ships Stranded in the Arabian Gulf: Operators Work to Repatriate Passengers
Regional tensions in the Middle East have led to significant disruptions in cruise shipping operations across the Arabian Gulf. Several vessels have found themselves unable to depart from major ports such as Dubai, Doha, and Abu Dhabi, resulting in the cancellation of many planned European voyages. Amid the situation, cruise companies are focused on repatriating thousands of passengers who are currently stranded in the region.
According to the International Maritime Organization, around 15,000 cruise tourists are unable to continue their voyages due to several operators’ ships remaining docked at Gulf ports. Key operators affected include MSC, TUI, Celestyal, and AROYA Cruises.
Celestyal Cruises has reported that its two vessels in the area have stayed in port. The Celestyal Discovery is docked in Dubai, where passengers have already disembarked, while the Celestyal Journey is in Doha, with remaining passengers expected to disembark shortly. The cruise line reassured that both ships are operational, although their departure is contingent on instructions from maritime and governmental authorities.
This disruption has impacted Celestyal’s upcoming Mediterranean program, leading to the cancellation of two sailings in March. Affected passengers will receive full refunds or future cruise credits.
AROYACruises also announced the cancellation of its remaining Arabian Gulf winter program, confirming that passengers were safely disembarked in Dubai earlier in March.
In a similar vein, MSC has begun organizing repatriation flights for passengers aboard the MSC Euribia in Dubai, successfully transporting over 1,500 guests back to various destinations across the globe, including the UK, Italy, Germany, Spain, the US, and Brazil.
TUI has suspended several sailings, including those of Mein Schiff 4 and Mein Schiff 5, which remain docked in Abu Dhabi and Doha, respectively. The company is actively coordinating return travel arrangements for all passengers and crew members through charter and commercial flights, working closely with local authorities amid the ongoing situation.
