Dockworkers Protest Disrupts Access to Port Maceio Ahead of MSC Seaview’s Arrival
Access to the Port of Maceió in Brazil faced significant disruption on Wednesday morning due to a protest led by dockworkers. The demonstration took place on Avenida Cícero Toledo in the Jaraguá district, where workers set up barricades and displayed banners stating their strike intentions. This action resulted in heavy traffic congestion for trucks and other vehicles trying to reach the port.
By around 7:30 a.m., two out of the three lanes on the road were blocked, creating long lines of traffic stretching into nearby parking areas. The protest coincided with the scheduled arrival of the MSC Seaview ship at approximately 10 a.m., a time typically marked by increased activity around the terminal as buses, taxis, and tour operators prepared for passenger transfers and shore excursions.
The dockworkers claimed the strike was in response to unmet demands regarding wage adjustments linked to the INPC inflation index and reductions in employee health plan costs. They indicated that these issues must be resolved before the work stoppage can be lifted.
