Introducing Longship Viking Eldir: The Latest Addition to Viking River Cruises’ Fleet

Viking River Cruises has recently welcomed the Longship Viking Eldir to its fleet. This new riverboat was built at Neptun Werft in Rostock-Warnemünde and is designed to navigate Europe’s major rivers, including the Rhine, Main, and Danube.

The Viking Eldir features a longship design that accommodates 190 passengers in 95 staterooms, joining a series of similar vessels aimed at enhancing European river travel. Torstein Hagen, Viking’s Chairman and CEO, emphasized that this vessel is part of the company’s strategy to expand its fleet and improve traveler access to key destinations via centrally located docks.

This ship is tailored for Central European waterways, boasting a contemporary Scandinavian design and several innovative features that are characteristic of the Viking Longship series. These include a squared bow that enhances internal space, three full decks for passengers, an indoor-outdoor Aquavit Terrace, and a unique corridor layout. Viking Eldir will serve on well-established routes such as the Rhine Getaway, Grand European Tour, and Christmas on the Rhine.

Viking’s broader strategy includes the introduction of a total of 22 new river vessels by 2028, in addition to 10 ocean cruise ships and two expedition vessels by 2031. Following the completion of these additions, Viking’s fleet will consist of 112 river vessels and a cumulative total of 25 ocean and expedition vessels.
