Orient Express Corinthian Breaks Records with Innovative Wind Propulsion Technology

The Orient Express Corinthian, a new sailing cruise vessel currently under development, is set to become one of the largest of its kind, measuring approximately 220 meters (721 feet) in length and boasting a gross tonnage of over 25,000. Designed for a more intimate experience, it will accommodate just 110 guests across 54 suites, emphasizing a low-density occupancy model.

Constructed by Chantiers de l’Atlantique, the ship features a hybrid propulsion system that combines wind power with liquefied natural gas engines. A key aspect of its design is the Solid Sail system, a rigid sail technology aimed at maximizing wind propulsion and minimizing reliance on traditional fuel sources.

The propulsion setup includes three carbon-fiber masts that reach about 100 meters above the waterline, with each mast supporting rigid sail panels totaling approximately 1,500 square meters in size, leading to an overall sail area of nearly 4,500 square meters. These sails are engineered for full 360-degree adjustment via rotating and tilting rigs, enabling optimal positioning based on prevailing wind conditions.

Additionally, the masts can incline significantly, allowing the vessel to navigate under bridges and other structures without losing operational capability. This design enhances the vessel’s aerodynamic efficiency and sailing maneuverability.

Preliminary sea trials have confirmed that the ship can operate solely on sail propulsion, achieving projected service speeds of up to 17 knots (around 20 miles per hour) under favorable conditions. The hybrid system allows for smooth transitions between wind-assisted and engine-driven modes, depending on the surrounding environment.

Chantiers de l’Atlantique has spent over a decade refining the Solid Sail concept, undertaking extensive testing that includes both scale-model and full-size demonstrations in their shipyard in Saint-Nazaire. These trials focused on assessing aerodynamic performance, structural integrity, and sail control mechanisms prior to their application on a full-sized passenger ship.

The Orient Express Corinthian represents a significant advancement in merging large-scale cruise ship construction with cutting-edge sail propulsion technology, establishing itself as a noteworthy example of wind-assisted maritime transport in the modern cruise industry.
