AmaWaterways’ AmaSofia Faces Propulsion Failure on Inaugural Voyage
During its inaugural journey along the River Rhine, the newly launched ship, AmaSofia, experienced a propulsion failure affecting two of its three engines. This incident, which occurred on March 18th, resulted in an unexpected interruption of service and necessitated the vessel to be towed to Koblenz for repairs.
The crew discovered a loss of power in the port-side engine early in the morning, which was soon followed by a similar failure in the starboard engine. As a result, only the forward engine was operational. Considering the dense traffic in the area’s confined waterways, the captain made the decision to drop anchor west of Urmitz-Bahnhof while waiting for technical assistance.
A cargo vessel was subsequently engaged to tow AmaSofia to Koblenz, allowing a more thorough assessment and repair of the malfunction. An engineering team from the shore was also dispatched to support the onboard technical crew, who were working tirelessly to restore full propulsion capabilities.
This inaugural cruise was largely comprised of U.S.-based travel advisors participating in the ASTA River Cruise Expo, and the situation required some changes to the planned itinerary. The scheduled stop at Rüdesheim was replaced with shore excursions in Koblenz while repairs were underway.
Ship leadership reassured passengers that efforts to resolve the technical problems were in motion with minimal disruption. Contingency plans were established to maintain the original intended daylight voyage through the scenic Rhine Gorge after repairs were completed. The crew quickly coordinated their efforts, both onboard and with external teams, aimed at expediting the return to regular operations.
Despite the challenges, the shipboard activities continued, with the time spent at anchor repurposed for scheduled programs adapted to the situation. Industry representatives aboard highlighted that while mechanical issues can be disruptive, they are a common occurrence in river navigation.
This incident came just days following the christening of AmaSofia, marking an early operational test for the ship as it began its first season serving European waters. For updates on incidents involving AmaSofia, visit the ship’s CruiseMinus page.
