British Passenger MedEvaced from Royal Caribbean’s Star OTS: A Breakdown of the Incident
A British passenger was medevaced from Royal Caribbean’s Star of the Seas, following a serious health emergency during a Caribbean cruise on March 9, 2026. The 64-year-old passenger experienced a medical crisis approximately 200 nautical miles northwest of Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, while the ship was on a seven-night itinerary that departed from Port Canaveral.
The United States Coast Guard was alerted and dispatched an MH-60T Jayhawk helicopter from Air Station Borinquen to execute the medevac. Such offshore operations require careful coordination and skillful navigation between the helicopter crew and the ship’s officers. Upon arrival, the helicopter team performed a successful hoisting procedure to transfer the passenger from the ship, followed by transportation to Centro Médico Hospital in Puerto Rico for further medical treatment.
A Coast Guard officer praised the operation for its professionalism, highlighting the effective coordination among the responding units, the ship’s crew, and the medical personnel on board. Medical evacuees are a common occurrence in cruise operations, especially during extended itineraries far from immediate port access. Helicopter retrieval is typically the preferred method for urgent cases needing prompt transfer to shore-based medical facilities.
After the evacuation, Star of the Seas continued its scheduled itinerary and successfully returned to Port Canaveral on March 15. For additional details about the Star of the Seas and related incidents, visit the ship’s CruiseMinus page.
