Costa Serena to Transform into Floating Accommodation for Nagoya Asian Games

A charter agreement has been established for the Costa Serena, which will serve as a stationary accommodation unit during the upcoming Asian Games in Aichi–Nagoya. The ship will be docked at Nagoya Port, catering to a significant number of athletes and officials throughout the games.

The arrangement is expected to accommodate between 4,000 and 5,000 participants, acting as part of a comprehensive lodging strategy that avoids the need for a traditional athletes’ village. Valued at around $28 million, this charter is intended to cut construction expenses and preparation time while still providing ample capacity for the event.

Organizers have noted that housing athletes on a cruise vessel has sparked conversations, particularly since the Games will take place during Japan’s typhoon season. Nevertheless, the arrangement is temporary and aims to deliver functional accommodation during the training and competition periods.

Accommodation assignments on the ship will be based on sporting disciplines rather than by national teams, differing from the typical setup of land-based athlete villages. The vessel will function as a self-contained living unit, utilizing its onboard facilities, including dining and recreation areas.

In addition to the Costa Serena, an extra 2,000 participants will reside in temporary modular units constructed along the Nagoya waterfront, while others will stay in regional hotels, including those in Tokyo where certain events are scheduled.

This implementation of Costa Serena is part of a broader, decentralized lodging approach for the Games, marking a departure from conventional centralized athlete housing. Preparations for the event are reportedly on track, and plans are being finalized in response to growing public interest and ticket sales.
