Orient Express Corinthian Breaks Records with Innovative Wind Propulsion Technology
The Orient Express Corinthian, a luxurious sailing cruise vessel, is making waves in the maritime industry with its innovative design and sustainability features. Expected to be among the largest of its kind, the ship measures around 220 meters (721 feet) in length and has a gross tonnage exceeding 25,000. It is designed to host just 110 guests in 54 suites, emphasizing a low-density occupancy model.
Built by Chantiers de l’Atlantique, the vessel boasts a hybrid propulsion system that integrates wind power alongside liquefied natural gas engines. A standout element of its design is the Solid Sail system, a cutting-edge rigid sail technology created by the shipbuilder to significantly enhance wind propulsion and minimize dependency on traditional fuel sources.
Three carbon-fiber masts, each soaring to approximately 100 meters above the water, are instrumental to this system. They feature rigid sail panels that amount to nearly 4,500 square meters when fully deployed. These sails are mounted on adjustable rigs, offering a full 360-degree capability to realign according to wind conditions, ensuring optimal efficiency and power.
The flexibility of the masts allows them to tilt significantly, making it easier for the ship to navigate beneath bridges or other structures while still maintaining agile maneuverability. Under favorable conditions, the Orient Express Corinthian can reach service speeds of up to 17 knots (about 20 miles per hour) using wind power alone, transitioning smoothly between sail and engine modes based on environmental contexts.
The development of the Solid Sail technology has spanned more than a decade, during which extensive testing—including scale models and full-scale demonstrations—occurred at the Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard in Saint-Nazaire. These trials have verified the overall performance of the design, covering aspects such as aerodynamics, structural integrity, and sail handling capabilities.
As such, the Orient Express Corinthian signifies a major advancement in the integration of luxury cruising with modern wind-assisted propulsion, positioning itself as a leader in the contemporary cruise sector.
