British Passenger Medivaced from Royal Caribbean’s Star OTS: Details and Updates
A medical evacuation occurred on March 9, 2026, involving a 64-year-old British passenger aboard Royal Caribbean’s Star of the Seas. This incident took place during a seven-night Eastern Caribbean cruise that had set sail from Port Canaveral. At the time, the ship was approximately 200 nautical miles northwest of Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, when the emergency arose.
The United States Coast Guard was alerted to the situation and dispatched an MH-60T Jayhawk helicopter from Air Station Borinquen to assist. Given the remote location, the operation required precise coordination between the aircrew and the ship’s officers to manage navigation and ensure a safe landing.
Upon arrival, the helicopter team executed a successful hoisting procedure to transfer the passenger from the cruise ship. The operation was performed without issues, and the passenger was taken to Centro Médico Hospital in Puerto Rico for additional treatment. A Coast Guard officer later remarked on the professional coordination exhibited by the attending units, ensuring the individual received prompt and effective care.
Medical evacuations like this are not uncommon during cruises, especially on routes where ships operate far from port access. Helicopter retrieval remains the most effective means for urgent medical cases requiring immediate transfer to hospital facilities.
Following the incident, Star of the Seas continued its itinerary and returned to Port Canaveral on March 15th. For more details on incidents involving the Star of the Seas, visit the ship’s CruiseMinus page.
