AmaWaterways’ AmaSofia Faces Propulsion Issues on Inaugural Voyage: What You Need to Know

During its inaugural voyage on the Rhine, the newly launched ship AmaSofia faced a serious setback when two of its three engines suffered a propulsion failure. This incident caused an unexpected service interruption, necessitating the vessel to be towed to Koblenz for essential repairs.

On March 18th, the crew was informed of a power loss from the port-side engine, which was soon followed by a similar issue with the starboard engine. With only the forward engine functioning, the captain deemed it unsafe to proceed under limited power in a congested river section. As a precaution, the ship was anchored west of Urmitz-Bahnhof until technical assistance could be coordinated.

A cargo vessel was then called in to tow AmaSofia to Koblenz for a detailed assessment and repairs. An engineering team was dispatched to support the onboard technicians in diagnosing and fixing the issues to restore full engine functionality.

The vessel was carrying primarily U.S. travel advisors from the ASTA River Cruise Expo, necessitating adjustments to its itinerary. The planned stop at Rüdesheim was substituted with shore excursions in Koblenz while repair efforts took place.

Ship leadership reassured passengers that measures were in place to resolve the technical difficulties quickly and with minimal disruption, including the hope of maintaining a planned daylight passage through the scenic Rhine Gorge after repairs. The crew responded promptly, with both onboard and external teams working together to expedite recovery to normal operations.

Despite the challenging situation, the onboard programming continued, with scheduled activities adapted to the circumstances during the time at anchor. Industry representatives aboard expressed that while mechanical failures can be disruptive, they are not uncommon in river navigation.

This incident marked an early operational hurdle for AmaSofia, occurring shortly after the ship’s christening, as it embarked on its first season of service in Europe.
