Carnival Corporation Enhances Shore Power Infrastructure in Whittier, Alaska
Carnival Corporation is taking significant steps in electrifying the cruise port infrastructure in Whittier, Alaska, as part of a wider initiative to lower emissions during ship operations at port. In collaboration with the State of Alaska and the Chugach Electric Association, the project will enable Carnival’s cruise ships, such as those from Holland America Line and Princess Cruises, to connect to the local electrical grid and operate without onboard engines while docked.
The improvements involve enhancing the electrical systems at the port, installing voltage step-down equipment near the berths, and providing shore-side connections. These connections will not only serve vessel operations but potentially offer power for auxiliary uses such as electric vehicle charging.
Initiated in 2023 with an investment of approximately $12 million, significant components like transformers and capacitor systems are already on site, with the project expected to be completed by 2027. Carnival Corporation views shore power as a critical part of its long-term strategy to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. The investment also aims to sustain the environmental quality that enhances the Alaskan cruise experience, maintaining a collaborative approach that has been in place for over twenty years, especially following prior developments in Juneau.
This project is part of a broader movement to increase shore power capabilities across Carnival’s fleet and its global network of ports. Being one of the first adopters of shore power technology in the cruise industry since its implementation in 2001, Carnival reports that a considerable number of its vessels are now equipped to use shore electricity, significantly reducing fuel reliance for auxiliary operations and potentially eliminating emissions while docked, depending on the local grid’s energy sources.
