Costa Serena to Set Sail as Floating Hotel for the Nagoya Asian Games
A charter agreement has been finalized for the Costa Serena to function as a floating hotel during the upcoming 20th Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, set to occur from September 19 to October 4, 2026. The ship will be stationed at Nagoya Port and will accommodate an estimated 4,000 to 5,000 athletes and officials.
This decision is part of a broader lodging strategy that aims to avoid the need for building a conventional athletes’ village. With a charter value of around $28 million, the initiative intends to mitigate construction costs and expedite preparations while ensuring the necessary accommodations for event participants.
Concerns have been raised regarding the suitability of a cruise ship for housing, especially as the Games coincide with Japan’s typhoon season. Nonetheless, the organizers have reassured that this arrangement is temporary and designed to provide essential lodging between competitions.
Onboard accommodations will be arranged by sporting discipline rather than by national teams, marking a shift from the traditional setup found in land-based athlete villages. The ship will function as a self-contained residential facility, offering its own dining and recreational amenities.
In addition to the accommodations on the Costa Serena, around 2,000 participants will be housed in temporary modular structures along the Nagoya waterfront, and more athletes will stay in regional hotels, including those in Tokyo, where some events will be held.
The deployment of Costa Serena is part of a new decentralized approach to athlete housing, moving away from the typical centralized villages of previous Games. Organizers report that preparations are on track as operational planning continues and public interest in the event grows.
