Unveiling Europe’s Largest Cruise Terminal: Gran Canaria Sets Sail for New Horizons
At the port of Las Palmas in Gran Canaria, a new cruise terminal has officially opened, touted as the largest in Europe. This significant development bolsters the region’s maritime infrastructure and cements Gran Canaria’s position in international cruise itineraries. The terminal, operated by Global Ports Holding in collaboration with local firm SEPCAN, spans approximately 14,000 square meters across two levels. It features three boarding bridges and is designed to handle both homeport and transit operations, allowing it to accommodate up to four cruise ships simultaneously.
The construction of this facility is part of a broader investment program valued at around EUR 40 million, aimed at updating cruise infrastructure throughout the Canary Islands, including Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, and Lanzarote. Built by Satocán, the terminal adheres to contemporary environmental and technological standards, utilizing recycled materials and incorporating solar energy solutions and energy-efficient systems. These efforts are intended to position the terminal as a model for sustainable port development in Europe.
Following Global Ports Holding’s assumption of operational responsibilities in the Canary Islands in 2022, cruise activity at the ports of Las Palmas, Lanzarote, and Fuerteventura has shown a steady increase, with passenger numbers growing from approximately 1.4 million to over two million by 2025. The new terminal infrastructure is seen as a critical foundation for future expansion.
The project demonstrates significant collaboration with the Port Authority of Las Palmas, particularly in enhancing surrounding port areas to ensure efficient access and circulation for passengers. Improvements to adjacent spaces include landscaped pathways and a large exterior esplanade, which connect the terminal with the city, creating a seamless arrival experience.
During the formal inauguration, regional and municipal leaders, port community representatives, security services, and local business figures gathered to acknowledge the importance of this new infrastructure. They highlighted the expected economic benefits to the city, particularly in boosting sectors such as retail and hospitality through increased cruise traffic.
Beatriz Calzada, president of the Port Authority of Las Palmas, emphasized that the terminal’s completion signifies not just a new building but a readiness to expand operations and enhance services for international cruise lines frequenting the Canary Islands. Francesc Grau, regional director for Global Ports Holding in the Western Mediterranean, called the opening a pivotal moment for Las Palmas, reinforcing its status as a key cruise hub in the Atlantic.
Mehmet Kutman, chairman of Global Ports Holding, expressed confidence in the long-term potential of the Canary Islands as a prime cruise destination. He noted that the new facility would strengthen Las Palmas’ role in the international cruise market and showcased the collaborative spirit among the port authority and local partners in developing modern infrastructure that enhances passenger experiences while supporting sustainable development.
Looking to the future, the new terminal is set to host the Seatrade Cruise Med conference later this year, expected to attract representatives from the global cruise sector and further solidify Gran Canaria’s status in the cruise industry.
