Why Philadelphia’s New Cruise Terminal Misses Its First Voyage: Insights and Implications
Philadelphia’s new PhilaPort cruise terminal is set to miss its deadline, as it will not be finished in time for its first scheduled sailing on April 16, 2026. The inaugural journey will feature Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Jewel, which will still embark as planned, but passengers will need to use a temporary facility for boarding.
Construction on the terminal began in December 2025, but delays caused by harsh winter weather—specifically severe snowstorms and freezing temperatures—have hindered progress. Despite these setbacks, PhilaPort has assured that the Norwegian Jewel will depart from Philadelphia as originally scheduled. The port stated, “There will be no delay for cruise passengers. The first scheduled sailing of the Norwegian Jewel will depart Philadelphia as planned on Thursday, April 16.”
Even with ongoing construction, the cruise line is coordinating efforts with PhilaPort to establish a smooth embarkation process during this interim phase. Norwegian Cruise Line has indicated that they are finalizing logistics for boarding and disembarkation for the initial sailings, expecting to share further details with affected guests soon.
The PhilaPort terminal is part of a broader initiative to restore Philadelphia as a prominent homeport for cruise operations, marking the city’s first regular departures in 15 years. Located near Philadelphia International Airport, this new facility is designed to accommodate modern cruise ships and handle large passenger volumes, featuring passenger processing areas, baggage handling facilities, and transportation staging areas.
The Norwegian Jewel, with a capacity of 2,368 passengers, is set to operate 7-night roundtrip voyages to Bermuda, beginning April 16, 2026. These itineraries will include several days at sea, a stop in Charleston, South Carolina, and an overnight stay at Kings Wharf in Bermuda. Following the Bermuda season, the ship will transition to cruise routes encompassing New England and Canada, running until October 17, 2026. In November 2026, the Norwegian Pearl will also start sailing from Philadelphia for its Bermuda trips.
