Gran Canaria Unveils Europe’s Largest Cruise Terminal: A New Era for Cruising in the Atlantic
Las Palmas de Gran Canaria recently inaugurated Europe’s largest cruise terminal, operated by Global Ports Holding (GPH) in partnership with local firm SEPCAN. Covering about 14,000 m² and built over two levels, the terminal features three boarding bridges and is designed to host up to four cruise ships at once. This facility aims to enhance passenger handling and create a modern entry point for visitors to the island.
As part of a €40 million investment in the Canary Islands’ cruise infrastructure, this new terminal will also serve Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, and Lanzarote. The construction adhered to contemporary environmental standards, utilizing recycled materials and incorporating solar energy solutions, energy-efficient systems, and waste management practices. This initiative sets a benchmark for sustainable port development in Europe.
Since assuming operational control in 2022, GPH has seen steady growth in cruise activity across the Canary Islands, with passenger numbers rising from approximately 1.4 million to over two million by 2025, solidifying the region’s role in Atlantic cruise routes. The terminal’s infrastructure is expected to facilitate further growth.
The launch of the terminal involved collaboration with the Port Authority of Las Palmas, focusing on enhancing surrounding areas for better access and passenger flow. Upgraded landscapes and an exterior esplanade aim to create a more integrated arrival experience for visitors.
During the inauguration, local officials and port community representatives highlighted the economic benefits anticipated from increased cruise traffic, particularly for local retail, hospitality, and service sectors. Beatriz Calzada, president of the Port Authority of Las Palmas, emphasized that the terminal signifies readiness for expanded operations and improved service quality for cruise lines.
Francesc Grau, GPH’s regional director for the Western Mediterranean, remarked that the terminal marks a significant step for Las Palmas, strengthening its position as a major Atlantic cruise hub. GPH chairman Mehmet Kutman noted the long-term potential of the Canary Islands as an attractive cruise destination and the importance of collaboration in fostering modern infrastructure.
Looking forward, the terminal will host the Seatrade Cruise Med conference later this year, which is set to showcase the island’s port facilities and further solidify its standing in the global cruise industry.
