Surge in Passenger and Cargo Traffic: Las Palmas Ports Report Significant Growth
The Port Authority of Las Palmas has reported significant growth in passenger and cargo traffic in the early months of 2026. From January to February, the authority recorded 888,378 passengers, an increase of 102,614 compared to the same period in 2025, marking a 13.06% growth. Cruise traffic was a major contributor, with 710,072 cruise passengers, which is an 18.31% rise from the previous year.
The February statistics further affirmed a robust start for 2026, showcasing solid performance in both passenger and cruise operations. The overall increase in traffic and cargo volumes reflects the resilience of the port system and its integral role in enhancing economic activity and connectivity for the Canary Islands.
In total, the port authority managed 5,655,540 tonnes of traffic in the first two months of the year, which is a 4.67% increase from 2025. Of this, cargo accounted for the majority at 5,152,884 tonnes, reflecting a growth of 4.25%.
Among the individual ports in the system, the Port of Las Palmas led the activity, handling 4,902,414 tonnes of traffic—up 5.36% from the previous year. Passenger movements at the port reached 503,623, a 16.22% increase compared to 2025. The cruise tourism segment was notably the fastest-growing sector, with a traffic rise of 28.37%, further establishing the Port of Las Palmas as a key gateway for maritime tourism in the region and a central point in Atlantic cruise itineraries.
The performance of both passenger and cargo segments illustrates the diversified operations of the port authority, which includes commercial shipping, cruise activities, and regional maritime connectivity in the Canary Islands and broader Atlantic area.
