Teenage Prank Linked to Overboard Alert on Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas
While returning to Florida after a six-day cruise, the Royal Caribbean ship Oasis of the Seas experienced a serious incident on March 20th. An overboard alert was triggered during the ship’s final day at sea, prompting a swift emergency response. The vessel had departed from Port Everglades and was navigating through Caribbean waters when the alert was made.
At approximately midday, the Navigation Bridge issued the “Oscar, Oscar, Oscar” signal, indicating a person may have gone overboard. This announcement activated the crew’s emergency protocols. The ship changed course and initiated a search pattern, deploying life rings and communicating with the U.S. Coast Guard.
Over the next 90 minutes, crew members performed visual sweeps of the water as the ship shifted from its routine service to emergency operations. Passenger accounts later revealed that the alarm was falsely triggered by a group of teenagers who misled a passenger’s grandmother into believing her granddaughter had fallen from the ship. Acting on this information, she alerted the crew, leading to the emergency response.
Normal ship activities ceased during the search; entertainment shows were halted, and pool areas were cleared while passengers looked over the rails, scanning the sea. About an hour and a half later, the bridge announced that the situation was resolved, with the missing person found safe aboard the ship. It turned out to be a prank, rather than an actual overboard incident.
Despite resuming its course towards Fort Lauderdale, the episode left many passengers feeling unsettled. The serious nature of the emergency response highlighted how crucial it is for such alerts to be taken seriously at sea, where immediate action is vital in real emergencies.
Maritime authorities warn that deliberately issuing false distress signals—especially those requiring rescue services—can lead to significant legal penalties in the United States.
