A-Rosa Sena Ship Collides with Amsterdam Road Bridge During Departure: What You Need to Know

On the night of March 25, 2026, the river cruise vessel A-Rosa Sena collided with a road bridge on the outskirts of Amsterdam during its departure transit.

The incident occurred around 9:30 p.m. local time when the ship, which had just left Amsterdam and was en route to Utrecht and subsequently Cologne, struck the underside of the Amsterdamsebrug bridge. This bridge, constructed in 1957, has a vertical clearance of approximately 9.5 meters. Reports indicate that the ship’s Wheelhouse, designed to be elevated for bridge passage, was mistakenly left raised upon entering the span. The collision resulted in significant damage to the Wheelhouse structure.

Following the impact, the ship continued to move forward, causing further damage as the radar mast was bent and the vessel grazed the canal wall before coming to a stop. Passengers reported feeling a strong jolt at the time of the collision.

Emergency services, including police and ambulances, arrived promptly at the scene. While the helmsman sustained minor injuries, fortunately, no passengers were reported hurt. Though the ship remained somewhat maneuverable, it later experienced a complete loss of electrical power, necessitating the evacuation of more than 200 passengers. Many of these travelers had been asleep when emergency measures were enacted, and they were assisted off the vessel and across a dyke to a nearby roadway. From there, buses were arranged to transport them to Cologne.

Due to the damage incurred from the collision, the A-Rosa Sena was unable to continue its scheduled journey and was expected to be towed back to Amsterdam. Following the assessment of the bridge’s safety, it was reopened to road traffic, though the canal remained partly closed for inspections. The ship, which had started its voyage from Amsterdam that day, was initially scheduled to reach Cologne by the weekend before continuing on another cruise to Hamburg.
