Adverse Weather Leads to Cancellation of Lerwick’s Inaugural Cruise Call
The first cruise call of the 2026 season to Lerwick, Scotland, has been canceled due to adverse weather conditions, preventing the Viking Neptune from docking as scheduled on March 23rd. This cancellation delays the commencement of the year’s cruise program, with the ship expected to return later in April as part of its planned itinerary from Bergen.
Despite this setback, Lerwick Harbour is gearing up for a bustling cruise season, with nearly 150 vessel calls expected throughout the year. Among these is a maiden visit from the Sky Princess, one of the largest ships set to arrive. The cruise season will continue through mid-November, culminating in the first visit of Le Commandant Charcot.
In conjunction with these preparations, the Shetland Islands Council has commissioned a study to evaluate the economic contributions of cruise tourism to the local economy. This research aims to assess the economic and social impacts of cruise activity on the community, identify infrastructural needs, and explore future growth opportunities in the sector. The consultancy firm McGregor Solutions has been tasked with the study, with a final report anticipated later in the year, budgeted at just under £25,000.
