Havila Voyages Unveils Lofoten Stopover: Experience Svolvaer on the Norwegian Coastal Route!
Havila Voyages has launched an innovative travel concept called the "Lofoten Coastal Stopover." This initiative merges a traditional coastal ferry cruise with a multi-day stay in the breathtaking Lofoten archipelago, developed in collaboration with Thon Hotel Svolvaer. Unlike typical itineraries that treat land stays as optional, this program seamlessly integrates them into the journey.
Passengers traveling southward from Kirkenes on Norway’s Coastal Route can disembark in Svolvaer, where they have the opportunity to spend 2 or 3 nights before continuing their journey on the following southbound ferry. Travelers will remain in the same cabin category they initially booked, ensuring continuity despite the change of vessels.
This new approach contrasts sharply with the conventional coastal voyage structure, which typically involves brief port calls and requires travelers to arrange extended land programs independently. Now, the stopover is built directly into the sailing schedule, allowing guests to explore the stunning landscapes, rich culture, and culinary offerings of the islands at a more leisurely pace.
The decision to implement the Lofoten Coastal Stopover reflects a shift in travel preferences, with more visitors seeking extended stays and a more flexible travel experience. The initiative is part of a broader effort named Coastal Stopover, which aims to introduce similar multi-day stays at various ports along the Norwegian coastline.
Lofoten is renowned for its dramatic landscapes, vibrant fishing communities, and enchanting seasonal phenomena such as the midnight sun and northern lights. Under the former itinerary, visits to the region were typically restricted to short port calls. The new structure now allows guests ample time to delve into local experiences.
During their stay, guests can enjoy activities arranged through a digital booking platform. Options include wildlife safaris, kayaking, mountain hikes, and cultural excursions that celebrate the region’s fishing heritage. This collaboration with the hotel aims not only to enhance the guest experience but also to provide economic benefits to local businesses and tourism operators.
Bookings for the Lofoten Coastal Stopover became available in week 12 and the first departures are scheduled for May 2026.
