Oceanwide Expeditions Sets Course for Sustainable Travel with New Eco-Sail Expedition Ships
The Netherlands-based Oceanwide Expeditions has signed a Letter of Intent to build two eco-sail expedition vessels, aiming to expand its fleet over the next decade. The vessels will maintain the brand’s tradition of small-ship expeditions and promote environmentally responsible polar tourism.
Designed to accommodate 146 passengers, the new ships will feature a hybrid sail propulsion system that combines wind-assisted propulsion with conventional power, significantly reducing fuel consumption and operational emissions. This new design represents an evolution of Oceanwide’s existing Hondius-class concept, incorporating advancements to enhance operational performance and guest experiences.
The first vessel is expected to be delivered in 2029, followed by the second in 2030, with commercial operation beginning in early 2027. As details on the shipbuilder and technical specifications are finalized, Oceanwide aims to continue its commitment to sustainability within the expedition cruise segment.
Hondius, which began service in 2019, was the first small expedition vessel built to Polar Class/PC 6 standards designed explicitly for polar expeditions. Oceanwide is also investing in its current fleet to adhere to environmental guidelines set by organizations like the International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators (IAATO) and the Association of Arctic Expedition Cruise Operators (AECO).
Company leadership heralded the signing of the Letter of Intent as the start of a new chapter for their fleet, emphasizing their commitment to modern sustainability technologies and the traditional expedition experience.
