TUI River Cruises Launches Two New-Build Ships at the TUI Aria Christening Event

TUI River Cruises has made a significant announcement regarding the addition of two new riverboats to its fleet, a move disclosed during the christening ceremony of the TUI Aria in Frankfurt on the Rhine. This step is a key component of TUI’s long-term strategy to expand its fleet, aimed to grow from six ships in 2026 to ten by 2028.

The forthcoming ships are designed to navigate several European and global river routes, including the Rhine, Nile, and Douro. They will feature environmentally friendly alternatives to traditional fuels, with methanol being highlighted as a potential energy source. Each vessel is expected to have 94 cabins, accommodating a total of 188 guests, and will introduce upgraded interiors and enhanced public spaces while adhering to TUI’s river cruise service standards.

This initiative marks TUI’s first venture into constructing purpose-built river cruise ships tailored for modern travelers. The investment reflects the brand’s growth, aligning with rising demand for river cruise experiences. The design process aims to cater to the UK market, focusing on versatility in travel options and diverse onboard experiences.

Company officials emphasized that commissioning these new ships symbolizes a major milestone for TUI’s river cruise endeavors and signifies their ongoing commitment to investment in the fleet. Notably, the new vessels are slated to enter service in 2028, coinciding with the inaugural operations of the TUI Aria, TUI’s largest refurbished ship.

The christening ceremony for TUI Aria included traditional maritime practices, such as the breaking of a ceremonial bottle and official ship naming, alongside celebrations to welcome TUI Aria into the fold.

Currently, TUI River Cruises operates four adult-only riverboats in Europe, including TUI Isla, TUI Skyla, TUI Maya, and TUI Aria, along with two vessels on the Nile, TUI Al Horeya and TUI Bahareya. The fleet is on a trajectory to further expand with the TUI Elara set to launch on European rivers in 2027, followed by TUI Luzia operating on the Douro, with the two newly announced ships following in 2028.

The fleet expansion comes in response to strong commercial performance, with TUI reporting a notable increase in booking volumes early in 2026, a reflection of the sustained appetite for river cruise experiences.
