Adverse Weather Leads to Cancellation of Lerwick’s Inaugural Cruise Call

The opening cruise call of the 2026 season at Lerwick, Scotland has been cancelled following adverse weather conditions that prevented the Viking Neptune from making its scheduled visit. The Viking Neptune was set to arrive on March 23rd to kick off the year’s cruise program, which has now been delayed.

The vessel, which has the capacity to carry 930 passengers and was scheduled to arrive from Bergen, is expected to return to Lerwick later in April as part of its planned itinerary.

Despite this setback, Lerwick Harbour is gearing up for a busy cruise season, with around 150 vessel calls expected throughout the year. Notably, several of these will be maiden visits, including the scheduled arrival of the Sky Princess, one of the largest cruise ships anticipated at the port this season. The cruise program is planned to run until mid-November, culminating with the first visit of Le Commandant Charcot.

Additionally, the Shetland Islands Council has initiated a study to evaluate the economic impact of cruise tourism on the local economy. This research aims to investigate the social and economic contributions of cruise activities to local communities, as well as identify infrastructure needs and future opportunities for the sector.

The study has been contracted to McGregor Solutions, with a projected value of just under GBP 25,000, and the final report is expected later this year. The insights gained will guide potential investments and funding applications to support business development initiatives within the community.
