Scylla Welcomes the Hybrid River Cruise Ship Lumière: A New Era of Sustainable Travel

Swiss transport operator Scylla has recently taken delivery of a new hybrid river cruise ship named Lumière, built by Vahali Shipyards in Serbia. Developed in collaboration with the luxury travel company Tauck, this 135-meter vessel is designed for operations on the Rhône River in France.

Lumière features accommodations for up to 130 guests across 68 staterooms and suites, including a mix of 22 spacious suites (about 28 m²), 34 cabins (about 21 m²), and 12 smaller cabins (about 17 m²). The ship provides remarkable views with two passenger decks equipped with floor-to-ceiling windows and French balconies.

With a crew of approximately 50, Lumière boasts a high guest-to-crew ratio, ensuring personalized service. The ship’s amenities include two restaurants, a sun deck with a small pool and bar, a gym, yoga studio, and a massage room. In an effort to promote energy efficiency, the entire onboard lighting system utilizes LED technology.

The ship features a navigation bridge strategically placed for optimal visibility in the narrow channels typical of the Rhône River. Powered by a hybrid system made up of two MAN D2682LE444 diesel engines and supported by generators and battery packs, Lumière can run on stored electrical power for short periods—up to 45 minutes—during maneuverability or when the main engines are not in use.

Advanced navigational equipment includes Furuno radar systems and other sensors, along with safety and communication systems designed by various European manufacturers. Additionally, Lumière is being utilized to test autonomous navigation technologies. Shortly after commencing operations, the ship successfully conducted a demonstration voyage in the Netherlands, utilizing an autonomous lane-assist system that made real-time course adjustments.

Now officially part of Scylla’s charter fleet, Lumière will operate on the Rhône under Tauck’s river cruise program, marrying luxury travel with innovative technology and sustainable practices.
