TUI River Cruises Celebrates the Launch of Two New-Build Ships at TUI Aria Christening Event
TUI River Cruises has made a significant announcement regarding the expansion of its fleet by signing contracts for two new riverboats. This reveal took place during the christening ceremony of the TUI Aria in Frankfurt on the Rhine River.
This addition is part of TUI’s long-term strategy to grow its fleet, aiming to increase the number of vessels from six to ten by 2028. The new ships are intended to service a variety of river itineraries across Europe and beyond, including routes on the Rhine, Nile, and Douro rivers.
Designed with sustainability in mind, these new vessels will be compatible with next-generation alternative fuels, particularly methanol. Each ship will feature 94 passenger cabins, accommodating a total of 188 guests, with modern interior layouts and enhanced public spaces while retaining TUI’s established service model.
The order marks TUI River Cruises’ venture into building purpose-designed ships for their river cruise fleet, reflecting a period of growth within the brand. The company emphasizes flexibility and diverse onboard experiences tailored for the UK market, aiming to enhance customer satisfaction through modern river cruising amenities.
The announcement coincided with TUI Aria’s introduction to service, symbolizing a pivotal moment in the company’s river cruise division. The christening ceremony included traditional maritime rituals such as the breaking of a ceremonial bottle and the official naming of the vessel, celebrated with entertainment to welcome the new ship into the fleet.
Currently, TUI River Cruises operates four adult-only riverboats in Europe, namely TUI Isla, TUI Skyla, TUI Maya, and TUI Aria, along with two vessels on the Nile. The planned launch of TUI Elara on European rivers is set for 2027, followed by TUI Luzia on the Douro, with the new riverboats slated to begin operations in 2028.
This strategic fleet expansion comes in response to a notable increase in booking volumes in early 2026, highlighting the robust demand for river cruise experiences.
