Ketchikan Bracing for Record-Breaking Cruise Ship Passenger Arrivals

Ketchikan is bracing for a significant influx of cruise ship passengers this summer, with expectations of more than 1.6 million visitors—an increase of over 100,000 compared to the previous year. The city’s Visitors Bureau anticipates that 58 ships will dock this season, up from 48 in 2025.

Laurie Booyse, the tourism manager for Ketchikan, collaborates closely with city officials, cruise lines, local vendors, and the community to prepare for the growing number of tourists. She highlights the arrival of larger ships that will impact the local infrastructure and emphasizes the city’s commitment to ensuring the safety and cleanliness of the downtown area.

One initiative under discussion is the construction of a public restroom facility on Creek Street, aimed at catering to the increasing number of visitors; however, this project is not expected to be completed in time for the summer season.

While the number of cruise ships hasn’t dramatically increased—54 was the highest recorded in 2022—the capacity of these ships continues to rise. The largest is projected to accommodate over 4,000 passengers. With Juneau implementing a passenger cap that restricts how many can disembark, Ketchikan is poised to welcome an influx of tourists that could rival that of the state capital. Juneau is forecasting 1.69 million passengers this coming season, and the cap has resulted in some cruise lines redirecting their ships to Ketchikan.

Alongside cruise ship visitors, Booyse notes an uptick in arrivals via airlines and ferries, with those travelers typically spending multiple days in the area seeking diverse experiences. This trend suggests a shift towards encouraging longer stays that allow visitors to engage more deeply with the local community, highlighted by their interest in establishments like the Monthly Grind and Fish Pirate’s Daughter.

The city is aware of the need to manage sustainable development across the island, rather than just in the downtown area, as some businesses are already planning expansions into the Ward Cove area anticipated to begin in May. The first cruise ship of the season is expected to arrive on April 12.
