DFDS Ferry Tarifa Jet Suffers Damage in Berthing Collision at St Helier, Jersey
A recent incident involving the high-speed ferry Tarifa Jet occurred during its approach to Elizabeth Harbour in St Helier, Jersey. The vessel, operated by DFDS, suffered damage to its stern after colliding with the east berth while docking on Sunday evening.
Fortunately, all passengers and crew aboard were unharmed and disembarked safely. However, the impact forced DFDS to cancel the ferry’s scheduled evening crossing to St Malo, France, along with adjustments to several upcoming sailings as inspections were conducted.
To mitigate the impact of the disruption, DFDS arranged for the Stena Vinga to operate the St Malo route, with alternative arrangements in place for passengers throughout the affected period. Cancellations also impacted departures to Portsmouth, UK.
In light of the situation, DFDS is working on contingency plans to maintain services during the busy Easter travel period, which may include deploying additional relief vessels. Passengers have been informed that updates regarding the holiday schedule will be provided once plans are confirmed.
Ports of Jersey officials began inspections following the incident. Specialized teams, including divers and confined-space inspection crews, were deployed to assess both the ferry and the infrastructure to gauge any potential damage.
The Tarifa Jet is a high-speed catamaran capable of reaching speeds of 42 knots, typically operating between Jersey, Guernsey, and St Malo. It can accommodate around 769 passengers and 145 vehicles. An investigation is currently underway to uncover the circumstances surrounding the collision, involving the ferry operator, port authorities, and the vessel’s flag state.
