Oceanwide Expeditions Unveils Plans for Eco-Friendly Sail Expedition Ships in Future Fleet Expansion
The Netherlands-based Oceanwide Expeditions has recently announced a significant expansion plan, signing a Letter of Intent (LoI) for the construction of two eco-sail expedition vessels. This initiative aims to bolster the company’s fleet over the next decade while promoting environmentally sustainable polar tourism.
The new ships are designed to adhere to the brand’s small-ship expedition model, with each vessel expected to accommodate up to 146 passengers. A notable feature of these ships will be the hybrid sail propulsion system, which combines wind-assisted propulsion with traditional power systems, thereby cutting down fuel consumption and reducing operational emissions.
These upcoming vessels are considered advancements of the company’s existing Hondius-class design, integrating enhancements meant to elevate operational efficiency and enhance the overall experience for guests. The first ship is projected for delivery in 2029, with the second to follow in 2030. Commercial operations for these new ships are set to commence in early 2027, and additional details—including names, shipbuilders, and technical specifications—will be disclosed as the project evolves.
The move aligns with Oceanwide Expeditions’ broader strategy to pioneer technical innovations within the expedition cruise sector. The company had previously made headlines with the launch of the Hondius in 2019, recognized as the first small expedition vessel constructed to Polar Class/PC 6 standards for polar expeditions.
In addition to developing new vessels, Oceanwide has been upgrading its current fleet to meet environmental standards set forth by organizations such as the International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators (IAATO) and the Association of Arctic Expedition Cruise Operators (AECO). This reflects the company leadership’s commitment to environmental stewardship and its rich heritage in sailing.
The signing of the LoI marks a new chapter for Oceanwide Expeditions, positioning it not only as a leader in expedition cruising but also as a responsible operator committed to minimizing its environmental footprint while offering unique guest experiences. Further updates regarding the design and construction of the new vessels are anticipated as the project moves forward.
