Severe Weather Leads to Cancellation of Lerwick’s Inaugural Cruise Call

The first cruise call of the 2026 season at Lerwick, Scotland, was canceled due to adverse weather conditions, which compelled the Viking Neptune vessel to withdraw from its scheduled visit. The ship was expected to arrive on Monday morning, March 23rd, marking the start of the cruise program, but port officials confirmed the cancellation, delaying the season opener.

Originally, Viking Neptune, a 2022-built ship with a capacity of 930 passengers, was set to depart from Bergen. It is now expected to return to Lerwick later in April as part of its itinerary.

Despite this setback, Lerwick Harbour is gearing up for a busy season ahead, with nearly 150 vessel calls planned throughout the year. Notable among these is a maiden visit from the Sky Princess, one of the largest ships set to dock at the port.

The cruise program is scheduled to continue through mid-November, when the Le Commandant Charcot is slated to make its inaugural visit to Lerwick.

Concurrently, the Shetland Islands Council has begun a study to evaluate the economic impact of cruise tourism on the local economy. The research aims to assess both economic and social effects of cruise activity in local communities and identify opportunities and infrastructure needs for the future.

The council has hired consultancy firm McGregor Solutions to carry out this study, which is set to conclude later this year with a contract value of nearly GBP 25,000. The findings are expected to highlight potential areas for investment, including necessary infrastructure enhancements, and aid in future funding applications and business development initiatives.
