Exploring the Impact of Cruise Tourism Across the Mediterranean: Insights from MedCruise Studies

MedCruise is initiating a significant study to evaluate the economic, social, and environmental impacts of cruise tourism throughout the Mediterranean. Titled the "Cruise Economic Impact Assessment Study," this project is a collaboration with Professor Thanos Pallis from the Department of Maritime Studies at the University of Piraeus.

The study aims to create a comprehensive roadmap that optimizes the benefits of cruise tourism. Lorenzo Vera, a member of the MedCruise Board and the project coordinator, emphasized that this marks a turning point in understanding cruise tourism in the region. By establishing a robust data-driven basis for discussions, the study seeks to empower ports and destinations to foster a sustainable and resilient future.

Involving 13 MedCruise Port Members — including locations such as Cabo Verde, Cartagena, Dubrovnik, Gibraltar, Kotor, and others — the study will quantify the economic footprint of cruise tourism and uncover sustainable development opportunities. It intends to communicate the benefits of cruise-related activities to local communities while enhancing employment opportunities and passenger experiences.

The methodology for this comprehensive assessment will blend quantitative and qualitative data to fully capture the effects of cruise tourism. Data collection is already underway and will persist throughout the cruising year, with consolidated results expected to be presented in 2027.
