Dramatic Rescue: 30 Passengers Evacuated After Cruise Ship Runs Aground on a Reef in Fiji
Thirty passengers were evacuated from a cruise ship that ran aground on a reef near Monuriki Island in Fiji, famous for being the filming location of the movie “Cast Away.” The MV Fiji Princess, operated by Blue Lagoon Cruises, grounded on Saturday after a severe squall caused the ship’s anchor to drag.
In a statement from Blue Lagoon Cruises, the company noted that conditions were calm when the ship anchored, but an unexpected squall led to the incident. A ferry arrived at the scene early Sunday morning, allowing passengers to disembark safely with their luggage. Thankfully, no injuries were reported during the evacuation.
The passengers were taken to Denarau Island, and any pumpable fuel and oils stored onboard the ship were removed by Monday, which helped to reduce any environmental risks. A salvage specialist from Australia has been overseeing the recovery efforts since Sunday.
The Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji, responsible for regulating maritime activities in the region, has not yet commented on the situation.
