MSC Cruises Strengthens Climate Reporting Support Initiatives in South Florida
MSC Cruises has reaffirmed its commitment to environmental stewardship by renewing its partnership with the Miami Herald to support a dedicated multimedia reporting position focused on climate change coverage. This collaboration, which began in early 2025, aims to enhance the flow of information about climate-related issues and responses within South Florida through both the Miami Herald and El Nuevo Herald.
The renewal of funding showcases the company’s dedication to fostering informed public discussions about sustainability in a region vulnerable to climate impacts. MSC’s leadership emphasized the critical nature of climate journalism in South Florida and reiterated that meaningful community dialogue on environmental matters is essential for long-term change. Their support also aligns with a broader investment strategy in the area, underscoring the value of credible local journalism.
This announcement comes on the heels of MSC Cruises’ first year of operations for the MSC World America and the inauguration of the MSC Miami Cruise Terminal, which has managed 273 vessel calls and processed approximately 2.5 million passengers. The Miami Herald’s editorial leadership has expressed that the financial backing will enable the continued production of quality climate reporting, reinforcing its long-term significance for the local community.
In addition to this initiative, MSC Cruises is actively pursuing a wider sustainability program. The company plans to launch 7-night Alaska itineraries departing from Seattle, partnering with ORCA to have a marine mammal specialist onboard for research and educational engagement with both crew and passengers.
Recent initiatives from MSC Cruises also include the launch of the Marine Conservation Center at Ocean Cay by the MSC Foundation and plans for a new private island destination, Sandy Cay, designed with environmental principles akin to those of the Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve.
These efforts are part of MSC’s long-term goal to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions from its marine operations by 2050, which will be supported by continued investments in vessel design, alternative fuels, and operational efficiencies.
