Coast Guard Suspends Search Efforts Following Crew Member Overboard Incident from Norwegian Cruise Ship
The U.S. Coast Guard has suspended its search for a crew member who fell overboard from the Norwegian Cruise Line’s ship, the Norwegian Breakaway, while it was traveling from Bermuda to Boston. The incident occurred approximately 12 miles east of Wellfleet, Massachusetts, as the crew member was captured on security footage falling from the ship.
Following the report, a search operation was initiated, with a HC144 aircraft and a crew from Coast Guard Station Provincetown conducting the search. However, the operation was called off due to the absence of new information as of 12:25 p.m. local time.
Norwegian Cruise Line confirmed that the vessel promptly reported the incident to the U.S. Coast Guard after the overboard situation was confirmed. They initiated a rescue operation, and the ship was subsequently allowed to continue its voyage. The cruise line stated that the safety and well-being of their crew is a top priority and expressed their condolences to the crew member’s family during this challenging time.
The incident delayed the ship’s return to Boston, leading to a potential hold-up in the embarkation of the next voyage as the search continued.
This situation follows a similar past incident involving another crew member from Norwegian Cruise Line who was lost at sea from the Norwegian Viva near Costa Maya, Mexico, which also ended with the search being suspended.
