The Government of Canada has announced a significant investment of up to $14.3 million for shore power infrastructure at Port Charlottetown, as reported by the Atlantic Canada Cruise Association. This initiative, unveiled by Transport Minister Steven MacKinnon, is part of the Green Shipping Corridor Program Clean Ports initiative.
The funding will facilitate the installation of infrastructure that allows ocean-going vessels to switch off their engines and connect directly to the local electrical grid while docked at the port.
Mike Cochrane, CEO of Port Charlottetown, stated, “This investment represents a transformational step forward for Port Charlottetown and Prince Edward Island as we continue advancing cleaner, more sustainable cruise infrastructure.” He further noted that by 2030, it is anticipated that over five key ports along the Canada New England cruise route will provide shore power capabilities, highlighting the cruise industry’s commitment to reducing emissions and fostering sustainable port communities.
This project marks an essential advancement toward promoting lower-emission cruise operations across Canada’s New England region.
