Hantavirus Outbreak: Cruise Ship Docks in the Netherlands for Urgent Disinfection

The cruise ship MV Hondius has docked in Rotterdam, Netherlands, following a serious outbreak of hantavirus that has resulted in at least 11 cases, including three fatalities. Of those, nine cases have been confirmed, and the outbreak appears to have originated with a Dutch couple who were likely infected while traveling in South America.

Upon arrival at the port on May 18, 2026, the ship was met with health officials in protective gear. The crew members onboard, totaling 25 along with two medical personnel, are undergoing quarantine procedures. The authorities have implemented strict measures, ensuring that the crew members show no symptoms and will be tested regularly during their quarantine period.

The vessel’s decontamination is set to comply with Dutch public health protocols, a process estimated to take three days. The Hamburg-based company operating the ship has indicated that the outbreak, marking the first known incident of hantavirus on a cruise ship, will not halt its operations, with another voyage planned shortly after.

Health officials, including Yvonne van Duijnhoven, Rotterdam’s public health director, emphasized that the risk to the general public remains low due to stringent preventive measures. However, the situation has drawn attention internationally, with various passengers and crew already isolated in the Netherlands due to previous flights from the ship.

In a troubling twist, a Canadian passenger in isolation has tested positive, prompting Canadian health authorities to coordinate with the World Health Organization as they monitor the outbreak. Meanwhile, in the United States, approximately eighteen individuals who had contact with the ship are under observation.

As the investigation continues, health authorities are sequencing the isolated virus strain, which appears to be consistent with known strains from South America, with no indications that it has mutated to become more dangerous or widely transmissible.
