HAL Holland America Line Expands European Cruises: Year-Round Deployment Planned Through Winter 2028

HAL-Holland America Line is enhancing its European cruise offerings by instituting a year-round deployment that extends operations through Winter 2028. This initiative positions Europe as a captivating destination not only during the summer but also throughout the winter and early spring months.

The 2027–2028 schedule will see the ship Nieuw Statendam remain in Europe continuously, thereby increasing capacity and extending seasonal coverage across both Northern Europe and the Mediterranean. The new program will feature twelve voyages during the offseason, resulting in over 70 additional port days compared to 2026. Additionally, two more European voyages will be added on the Zuiderdam, providing travelers with more options beyond the peak summer season.

The program aims to showcase Europe as a year-round destination, emphasizing seasonal experiences and a more relaxed pace of travel. For instance, Northern European sailings will include holiday and Christmas market voyages, while Mediterranean itineraries will feature extended stays in ports, reducing congestion and increasing time ashore.

The holiday cruises on Nieuw Statendam are designed with overnight stays and late departures, allowing guests access to local Christmas markets and cultural festivities. The itineraries in the Baltic and Scandinavian regions will include stops in cities such as Stockholm, Helsinki, Hamburg, and Copenhagen, with additional routes exploring southern Norway during the festive season.

Post-holiday, the company will shift its focus southward to the Mediterranean and Canary Islands, expanding access to popular destinations like Valencia, Marseille, Livorno, Naples, Mykonos, Rhodes, and Kusadasi. The programme includes both shorter regional trips and longer Collector’s Voyages lasting up to 24 days, aimed at providing guests with a deeper exploration of their chosen destinations.

Paul Grigsby, vice president of deployment and itinerary planning for Holland America Line, emphasized that Europe continues to be one of the company’s top destinations. The move to operate year-round is indicative of the rising demand for winter travel, highlighting the unique maritime experiences present during the colder months, characterized by fewer tourists and greater opportunities for local interactions.

This expanded deployment reflects a significant pivot in the strategy for European cruising, blending longer seasons with region-specific experiences to complement traditional summer offerings. For Holland America Line, maintaining a steady presence in Europe throughout winter and early spring offers travelers a continuous connection to the continent’s evolving cultural landscape.
