Oceanwide Expeditions has reported a serious hantavirus outbreak aboard the Hondius, a vessel en route from Ushuaia, Argentina, to Praia, Cape Verde. The incident has tragically resulted in the deaths of three individuals, with additional passengers and crew members receiving medical treatment.
In response to the outbreak, a collaborative effort involving medical organizations, maritime and aviation authorities, and national governments was initiated. This effort was focused on the safe disembarkation of all passengers and crew from the vessel, ensuring that those in need of urgent medical care were transferred as quickly as possible.

Epidemiological investigations have revealed that the virus was not transmitted aboard the Hondius. Instead, it was introduced from an external source in South America. Following the incident, Oceanwide Expeditions implemented precautionary measures to sanitize the vessel thoroughly before it resumes service for the Arctic season.
