Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) has chosen the Series 2 turbocharger silencer filters from NorthWest Clean Air Company (NWCA) for its upcoming ship, Norwegian Aura. Recently floated out at Fincantieri’s shipyard in Monfalcone, Italy, the vessel is expected to become the largest in NCL’s history when it launches in May 2027.
The Norwegian Aura will join the ranks of other Prima Class vessels like the Norwegian Viva, Aqua, and Luna by utilizing these sustainable turbocharger filters. This innovative filtration solution replaces traditional single-use filters with a washable electromechanical element, promoting fuel efficiency and environmental sustainability.
According to NWCA, a well-maintained turbocharger silencer intake filtration system is crucial for preventing issues such as fouling of the charge air cooler, which can lead to increased exhaust gas temperatures and higher fuel consumption. The adoption of these filters is not limited to NCL; other cruise lines, such as Viking and Princess, have also opted for this technology for several of their ships, with Cunard planning to retro-fit the filters on its Queen Anne, Queen Elizabeth, Queen Victoria, and Queen Mary 2 in 2026. Orders have also been placed for P&O’s vessels, including Ventura and Britannia.
