Third Stomach Illness Outbreak Hits Alaska Cruise Ship in Under Three Months

An Alaska cruise ship, operated by National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions, has reported a concerning third outbreak of stomach illnesses within a three-month timeframe. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced that 18 of the 62 passengers aboard the National Geographic Sea Bird experienced symptoms such as abdominal cramps and vomiting during a recent sailing from July 10 to July 15.

This incident marks the third gastrointestinal outbreak on the vessel this summer, with previous outbreaks occurring during cruises from May 31 to June 5 and another from June 5 to June 10. The CDC determined that the initial two outbreaks were attributed to norovirus.

While the cause of the most recent illness has yet to be identified, the symptoms remain consistent with those of the prior outbreaks. In response, the cruise line has stated that they are reinforcing cleaning and disinfection measures in accordance with their established outbreak prevention and response protocols.

The National Geographic Sea Bird sails along the coasts of Alaska and British Columbia in the summer season and has the capacity to accommodate up to 62 passengers in its 31 rooms.
