The Port Authority of the Douro has notified river cruise companies that the Douro River has reached its maximum capacity for cruise ships, due to operational constraints involving lock usage and navigation management. This decision was communicated in a letter to cruise operators in March, indicating that no new passenger shipping operations can be authorized until a thorough assessment of the river’s operational conditions is completed.
This measure reflects the growing demand for river cruises in a region that has quickly become one of Europe’s most popular destinations. The Douro River, which meanders through Portugal’s famed wine-producing region, has seen an uptick in river cruising activity. Following the introduction of new vessels in 2025, even more riverboats are projected to join the fleet in 2027 and 2028.
