A recent incident aboard the MSC Divina cruise ship caused chaos and panic when six passengers were arrested for broadcasting fake emergency alerts via the ship’s intercom system. The false announcements, made early in the morning as the ship sailed from Marmaris, Turkey, to Naples, Italy, claimed that the captain lost control of the vessel and that it was adrift at sea, inciting fear among passengers.
Alarmed guests quickly reported the announcements to the Italian Coast Guard’s Operations Center. Following the ship’s docking in Naples, authorities boarded with assistance from the city’s Border Police and traced the broadcasts back to the group of offenders based on a formal complaint from the ship’s captain.
The six men face charges of unauthorized access to a computer system and causing public alarm. An MSC Cruises spokesperson clarified that the ship’s operational systems were not hacked or compromised and stated that they had implemented new preventive measures to ensure such an incident doesn’t happen again. The captain publicly apologized to the passengers for the disruption caused by the incident.
